Transcendently Lumino-Glorious

I'm not one of the Animal Collective Backlash Battalion. I haven't heard Merriweather Post Pavilion, and, based on my past experience with the band, I'm a lot more likely to love it than hate it. But I will say this: I don't think I've ever encountered an album before where every single review seems so completely incapable of even drifting close to an explanation of what the music actually sounds like.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. But it's certainly an interesting development.

This has nothing to do with anything, but I actually went to college with somebody from Animal Collective. Goes by "Deakin"--I don't think he plays on this album, though. Nice guy, although I'm not sure we got along that great.

then again, I'm the type of guy to have an LJ default user icon of Phil Lynott
I think I know exactly which review spurred this post, and it did absolutely nothing to cover one of the most important duties a review can have -- attempting to convincing the unconvinced. (In this case, me. I tried to like MPP and failed miserably.)

Well, it was sparked by the AV Club review, but it shares in common with three other reviews of the thing I’ve read (Pitchfork, PopMatters and RS) the fact that the reviewer, either through unwillingness or inability, doesn’t get within a mile of saying what the thing actually sounds like, even in reference to the band’s other records.

This sometimes happens when a band is so unique that there’s no critical vocabulary to describe what they’re doing, but more often, it happens when critics decide they really like a record but can’t be arsed to explain why. Like I said, I’ll probably love the thing based on my past enjoyment of AC, but I sure don’t love what it’s inspiring critics to write about it.

These people seem relatively articulate - then again, they all seem to HATE the album.
