My picks in 2009's annual Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll of the best albums and singles of the year. As usual, I veer wildly between being more or less in agreement with the bulk of my fellow critics and being leagues out of step with them. One the albums in my top ten was #558 overall, slightly below Darius Rucker's country album.

Favorite P&J discoveries (and here's my ballot):

-The only other person to put the Johnson&Jonson album on their ballot was a guy named Alvin Aqua Boogie Blanco, whose ballot was 100% hip hop. He earns my eternal gratitude for this, and for the fact that he actually named himself after a track on The Motor-Booty Affair.

-Jeanius more or less tied with Britney Spears' Circus.

-One single I voted for, Atmosphere's "Wild Wild Horses", finished at #1720.

It is interesting to me that you put that Lair of the Minotaur record that high. I liked it, I think, but found it to be essentially unmemorable. Like, I'm trying to think of a song from it right now, and I totally can't. Maybe I need to spend more time with it.
