Whoredump

I've been so unspeakably busy lately, for reasons I will get to once they stop happening in a month or so, that it seems like I haven't updated in forever. But there's always time for whoring!

- I finished up my coverage of the SxSW film festival in Austin.

- I reviewed more episodes of Kings, the fascinating but doomed NBC drama. I also stood in for zulkey with a couple of reviews of American Idol.

- I offered up some comic book reviews with my AVC betters, and contributed to inventories about concept albums and posthumous projects.

- I interviewed the divine Ms. Isabella Rossellini.

- I instituted a new column in which I contemplate the cultural detritus I have accumulated over a lifetime, starting with a huge box of Destroyer novels.

- I wrote a beginner's guide to the E Street Band.

- I contemplated Frank Black's lyrical obsessions.

- I enumerated my all-time favorite comic performances.

- I got drunk and discussed hookerbots, among other things.

- I interviewed one of San Antonio's two rappers.

And, in the world of things that aren't posted online, I reviewed a couple of restaurants, took a road trip to Waco to revisit the Branch Davidian massacre, wrote about the Canadian produce trade, covered the California water shortage, and asked truckers what they look for in a client. But you wouldn't have read that stuff anyway.

Cheers! I truly hope you're all well, and hope to be back in the posting habit come May.

I love Kings! As usual, every thing I love dies off way too soon. *weeps*

Leonard, I wanted to ask you how you interviewed Isabella Rossellini.

I'm not sure I understand the question. I just opened my mouth and questions came out.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Did you talk to her on the phone, was she at SXSW, or what?

Ah, I see. It was a phone interview, which probably saved me from making too big a fool of myself.

Your Kings reviews make me nearly as happy as the actual show itself.

That being said, I hope Michelle and David stop acting like kids soon. Not to spoil one of the oldest works of literature in the Western canon, but King Silas probably isn't going to be around forever. That means the plot rests on their shoulders pretty soon.

BIBLE SPOILER ALERT!
Yeah, that kid who plays David needs to start learning how to act like a bastard PDQ. Then again, the show's gonna be cancelled in 9 episodes, so it really doesn't matter.

Alas, I find Michelle and David to be the most boring characters. The Queen, on the other hand...!

Also, I'm quite fond of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and Thomasina.

Though there's an Old Testament nerd in me who's delighted at the reprisal of what is probably my second favorite Bible story, there's another part of me that wishes they'd concentrate on the unwritten, tangential stories. Also that there'd be more Boyden and Klotz.

I love Kings, everyone I've talked to loves Kings, and I'm really sick of people saying it's going to be canceled.

They showed a map last episode! Gilboa is in the middle east!

You know, I wouldn't have pegged you as a Kings-watcher, but God bless, little soldier.

I'm pretty sure it's dead in the water. They moved it to SATURDAY NIGHT, for Christ's sake.

Oh and did you know that Liberty Mutual paid the network $5 million dollars to have creative control and the ability to "clean up dialoge" on Kings? They approached ABC and CBS first about it, but they were "unwilling to let the insurance company be involved in the development process".

Yeah, I read that -- very odd. It's certainly not a show I would watch and say "well, obviously, the writers are pawns of the insurance industry".

Oh, sure. No link to the most interesting one.

You could subscribe to absurdly overpriced produce industry trade journals just like everyone else.

Hey Leonard,

When are you coming up to Chicago next. I would like to buy you a beer, (or whiskey) if that's cool.

It's pretty shameless of me to ask this in your comments section no less, but I'm a near-starving freelance writer, so I am quite nearly beyond shame.

I know the Onion AV Club generally gives TV coverage assignments to staff, but if they might be interested in taking in someone who would love to write about "Seinfeld" for their Classic TV section, I would be totally game.

Actually I live in California and care about being able to get ahold of water, so I'd love to know where your writing about water issues showed up.

The last issue of Blueprints magazine. Available, as it happens, to subscribers only. If you don't live in Central Cali, though, you have nothing to worry about, for the time being, because you're stealing everyone else's water.

I live in a water-exporting chunk of California - in the Hetch Hetchy and Russian River area - and so I naturally resent the hell out of the Central Valley.
