It never ends

Right-wing blowhard disputes that black man being beaten to death by club-wielding mob constitutes "lynching" for completely sophistic reasons. Blowhard is called out for his idiocy by various other sources. Blowhard responds by:

1. Reiterating his stance that it wasn't a lynching because

1(a). A lynching is mob violence, and though there were a lot of people there, only three of them actually beat the guy to death, and three people isn't a mob.

1(b). A lynching cannot be a lawful act, and a court ruled that the sheriff, deputy and policeman who committed the murder "'acted under color of law.' Which means they had legal authority."*

2. Moving on to the claim that Barack Obama and Shirley Sherrod are the modern-day version of the southern racists who committed the non-lynching.

3. Concludes by comparing himself to Atticus Finch.

I've said it before, and I'm wearily certain I'll say it again: the right-wing conservative wing of the Republican Party keeps railing against their characterization by liberals as racist. And then they go around saying shit like this, every single day. It's really not hard: if you don't want people to think you are racist, stop saying racist things.

*: In fact, it does not mean that at all.

reminds me of Clarance Thomas on the meaning of cruel & unusual punishment.

Dissenting, Thomas wrote that, in his view, "a use of force that causes only insignificant harm to a prisoner may be immoral, it may be tortious, it may be criminal, and it may even be remediable under other provisions of the Federal Constitution, but it is not 'cruel and unusual punishment.' In concluding to the contrary, the Court today goes far beyond our precedents."[139] Thomas's vote - in one of his first cases after joining the Court - was an early example of his willingness to be the sole dissenter (Scalia later joined the opinion).[140] Thomas's opinion was criticized by the 7-member majority of the Court, which wrote that by comparing physical assault to other prison conditions such as poor prison food, Thomas's opinion ignored "the concepts of dignity, civilized standards, humanity, and decency that animate the Eighth Amendment."

And that tea party guy saying how can he be a racist when the NAACP has "colored" in the name. OH MY!

I've always suspected the "unusual" part of "cruel and unusual" would bite us in the ass someday: "I'll concede that setting a man on fire is cruel, but when you do it as much as we do, it could hardly be called unusual. Now fetch my matches!"

I rather enjoyed the many, many "Dude, please, you're just embarrassing yourself" responses. Particularly noteworthy was a post by "The Dead Horse" reading simply "Stop beating me."

See, conservatives and liberals CAN unite around a common cause. It's like our own little "Architects of Fear"!

He’s right, you know.
A “lynching,” in its strictest terms, refers to the act of making public the embarrassing past actions of a candidate for Supreme Court justice. Everyone knows that.

Watching those comments unfold is amazing.

COMMENTER: "I can't believe you're saying this wasn't a lynching! Three people is legally a mob and 'under color of law' has nothing to do with legal authority!"
JEFFREY LORD: "I can't believe YOU are all accusing me of racism when that was the SUPREME COURT'S view of the matter in 1945! Which is why I have been so terribly disturbed by the whole thing!"
COMMENTER: "You cited their statement as your evidence for your own claim that it wasn't a lynching.
JEFFREY LORD: ::whistles off in the distance somewhere::

And then it happens all over again three comments down. And again and again and again.
