Who's paying for all this, anyway?

So, let me get this straight. We said there'd be no war with Iraq as long as they allowed UN inspectors, got rid of their weapons of mass destruction, and made a full and complete statement of their death-dealing inventory.

Now, as the weeks go on, we are saying "this isn't about inspections" -- in fact, we are being largely dismissive of the inspectors, and downright hostile to them as they continue to not find anything. And we're saying just because we can't FIND and WMD, that doesn't mean there AREN'T any -- indeed, we KNOW they have them, whether or not anyone actually turns them up. And we're saying that we don't care about Iraq's declarations, because we know they're all bogus, and that no matter what they say, they're lying.

My question, then, is: why the charade? Why bother to play out the string? It's obvious even to hawks that this is all just pretense, and that we've got our collective will set on war. So why all this fucking around? It's probably costing millions of dollars a day and it's utterly pointless. If we're bound and determined to have this ridiculous war, why are we still wasting time, money and effort on the inspections?

This is what happens when you put businessmen in charge of everything: they start you on a project they know is going to fail, just because it'll look good. It's a show that's almost unique to the corporate world. "Due diligence" is the phrase that's used to describe the pointless show before you do what it is you always wanted to do in the first place.

The right has been saying for decades that what we need is a president who runs the country like you'd run a business. Well, we finally got one. This is what it's like. Hope you enjoy it.
