Lileks today, bitching about an AP article on the newly released McCarthy hearings transcripts:

"This is my favorite line from the news story: 'McCarthy flourished during Cold War anxieties, with some parallels to today's fear of terrorism.' You remember when the Soviets drove a 707 into the Empire State Building."

See? The McCarthy hearings were wrong, because the communists weren't really a threat. Not like TERRORISTS! It's okay to use our hysterical overreaction to terrorism to justify McCarthyite tactics against Arab-Americans, because unlike the Reds, the terrorists are really, really bad.
