September 11th, 2003

flavored with age

Condemned to repeat it

Today is September 11th, and my best thoughts are with all those who lost family and friend, who lost meaning and reason, who lost faith and sense that day.

It is worth noting that September 11th also marks the 30th anniversary of the coup in Chile, orchestrated and abetted by the American CIA, which ended in the death of their democratically elected leader and the installation of the rightist dictator Augusto Pinochet. His rule resulted in the death of thousands of people, more than were lost on the attacks on America 28 years later.

My sincerest hope is that we have seen the last of ruthless, deluded fanatics murdering Americans on our own land, and that we have seen, as well, the last of heartless, calculating ideologues imposing America's will on the rest of the world at the cost of many lives. My profoundest fear is that we have not.
