space geek

Here is something you can't understand: how I'm a big geeky man

I still haven't seen Watchmen, but from the moment it was announced, I knew two things would happen: my enjoyment of the book would be slightly diluted by the unavoidable discovery of how many people liked it for the "wrong" reasons; and every comic geek in the universe would crawl out of their whiney-holes to find some abstruse thing to complain about. (Note that I certainly do not exclude myself from this latter category.)

But then a funny thing happened. As I predicted, a million billion geeks soiled their Iron Man underoos over the fact that the collective main characters are referred to in the movie as a group called "the Watchmen", when in fact, they were never an actual group, and they were never called the Watchmen. BUT! As far as I have seen, there has been absolutely no mention of the equally meaningless and pedantic fact that in the movie (or at least in the upcoming DVD release), the pirate story is referred to as Tales of the Black Freighter, when in fact the story is called "Marooned".

Either America's geeks are less informed than I thought, or less geeky. I'm not sure which I'm rooting for. In fact, I'm not even sure if I'm happy or sad about this development.
