Ten Things

1. I actually spend far less time online now than I did when I had a job, because I have a lot more things to do now. This is probably not a surprise to most of you with rewarding employment of some sort.

2. Captain America, in what has to be one of the most pointless do-it-for-the-sake-of-doing-it editorial decisions in the "fuck it" history of post-1990 Marvel Comics, is moving to Canada to head up Alpha Flight.

3. Hey, Tom DeLay! What an asshole that guy is, huh? This seems to follow the new GOP strategy of cutting the rotting meat because they know they can get someone just as crooked loyal in replacement.

4. Here is an actual promotional line from Hugh "Front Lines of Terror"'s new book, presented just as if it was something to brag about: "(Hewitt calls) on his own extensive experience, and on the savvy political minds of Mark Steyn, Fred Barnes, Michael Barone, and others in exclusive interviews". Ah, yes, the savvy political mind of Freddie Barnes, who, almost three years ago to the day, said "The war was the hard part. The hard part was putting together a coalition, getting 300,000 troops over there and all their equipment and winning. And it gets easier. I mean, setting up a democracy is hard, but it is not as hard as winning a war."

5. Speaking of cranks, I am currently in the running for a gig where I will actually be paid to foist by rude, thoughtless political opinions on people. I'm replacing James Lileks! No, not really. No names, no pack drill, watch this space for hopefully no disappointment.

6. I miss my cats.

7. There is a little row of stores in Northeast Minneapolis; one of them is called "Pop" and another is called "Snap". In the middle is a bakery called "Sara Jane's", but it's changing it's name to "Crackle". No, really.

8. I'm still not done unpacking and setting up my office. But I'm not done in a much more forward-looking and progressive way than I was not done this time yesterday! I may not get much accomplished, but I fail to accomplish things in a very dynamic fashion.

9. I have to find a good comic shop around here. And a bank. I have already found, however, a bar that (a) is within walking distance, (b) sometimes features concerts by haggard, talentless '80s hair metal bands and (c) twice a week, has a meat raffle. MEAT RAFFLE!

10. Jonathan Lethem's Gun with Occasional Music is the best pseudo-Chandlerian detective novel featuring talking kangaroos I have ever read; Bobby 'Blue' Bland's "I'll Take Care of You" (which I heard yesterday morning on the excellent local public radio music station, the Current) is the best lover-man soul-blues song I have ever heard; and this Rebecca Hagelin review of a worthless new book on the Lincoln assassination is one of the most hilarious attacks on Gore Vidal I have ever seen, especially when she vilifies Vidal, who never finished college let alone taught it, as a typical liberal academic.
