Heavy Metal Poisoning

Yesterday afternoon, just as I was considering calling it a career and spending the rest of my life as one of those people who hangs out in front of the gas station begging for spare change all day, I finished the largest and highest-paying freelance gig of my life to date. To celebrate, I am going to go home tonight, mix myself a gimlet or three, and sleep for 20 hours straight. In the meantime, here is a poll to make up for the lack of one on Monday.

in your hair metal list, you forgot trixter and kik tracee, who i would have tagged as "uncomfortable feelings." also, bonham for besmirching the elder bonham's name.

I only had 20 slots to fill. Hence, no Slaughter, Faster Pussycat, Bang Tango, Krokus, Mr. Big, Steel Dragon, Vixen, Y&T...I could go on.

Considering he's kind of a minor cult figure, it's just barely possible that I know more about Henry Threadgill than Lester22 does, although I'm certain his jazz knowledge dwarfs my own. Not least because I can't actually play or read music.

I know a bit about Threadgill, but I will defer to you in this area. I'm staking claim to a larger breadth of knowledge, as in, if pressed and lubricated with alcohol and/or drugs, I could probably give a good two-hour jazz history lecture off the top of my head.

It was very difficult to choose among the least rockin' songs, but I finally had to settle on Starship, because that is in the top 5 of my Most Hated Songs of All Time.

Which song featuring the word “rock” is the least rockin’?

I assume it would be equivocation, and therfore cheating, to cite songs like "I am a Rock" or "Rockabye Baby."

I kept thinking of "We Want a Rock" by They Might Be Giants, which surely ain't very rockin.

What gambling games do you enjoy?

I got into video poker at the casinos on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

One of the memories of Katrina that haunts me is seeing video poker machines washed up on the roadside, up in trees, etc.

Gamblin
The only real gambling I ever do is betting nickels. My family bets nickels on EVERYthing -- hydroplane races, the answer to Final Jeopardy, whether or not SoAndSo was in SuchAndSuchaMovie. We always make good.

I hate gambling because it triggers such money anxiety in me. However, being a huge nerd, I am interested in the probability and game theory aspects of gambling, and in intricate, obscure or unique games. Like Faro or Skat.

I'm the DJ, he's the rapper
I am asked to convey to you (from an "other" voter who can't find his LJ log-in at the moment) that "Jingle Bell Rock" is an order of magnitude less rockin' than anything you listed.

Thank you for your time.

I think "We Built This City etc." is especially not rockin' because it was a detestable song performed by musicians with a relatively rockin' past. The other songs, they're mostly not bad songs, but WBTC IS bad, a true tragedy, and knowing these are some of the people who gave us "White Rabbit" is quite depressing...not that I like "White Rabbit," but being so critical to the late-60s counterculture merits cool points.

But they're not saying it IS rock and roll. They're just saying, R&R is the foundation of this city. I'm sorry, but Billy Joel is anti-rock. I like a few of his songs, but it's not exactly a coincidence that his oeuvre made for the platonic ideal of a broadway show.

A college acquaintance was taking out a woman he really wanted to impress, so he went to some lengths to plan the perfect date. He took her to Manhattan on a nice day and they spent time walking the streets in cool neighborhoods. Then dinner at a great restaurant, and finally Miles Davis at a small club.

All had gone swimmingly. After the concert, as they walked down the street, who should they see approaching but Miles himself. This provided the opportunity for the ultimate capper to the perfect date: as they passed the great musician, my acquaintance waved and said "Easy, Miles."

Miles, of course, rasped back "Fuck off, asshole."
