A White Man Complains About Racism, Part 1

Is it just me, or is there a noticeable distinction between the way the federal government has responded to the California wildfires and the way they responded to Hurricane Katrina?

It's just me, right? Or at the very least, they learned from their mistake. Because, if I were to suggest that there was a deliberate or intentional difference between the two responses, I would be no better than those bullhorn-toting crazies with sandwich boards who think the Russians control the weather.

Right?

It's just me.

Hate to play the devils advocate here, but there is a chance that California, with its population, resources, and money, is more of a well-oiled machine than Louisiana. It's the seventh-largest economy on earth™ !

Also SoCal burns down like every year, so they kind of expect this to happen around this time.

Oh, there's a lot more important demographic in those particular areas of Southern California than Hispanics.

Ha ha, of course! The liberal media is pointing out the disparity so that it will stir accusations of racism! It's not that there's any ACTUAL racism, because there never is.

you're not the only one. unfortunate and incredibly callous that the bush administration will try and use this "quick response" as evidence that "we learned our lessons with hurricane katrina," because a. the fires are still burning, so who's to say what aid will be provided in the aftermath? and b. um, sorry, new orleans is sort of in the shitter, don't go pattin' yourself on the back too quickly.

Yeah, the current state of NO is a pretty wild testament to what bullshit the "learned our lesson" thing really is. It's like I got drunk and threw up on the front porch, and then told you "I've learned my lesson! I'll never drink again!". And you said, okay, great, can you clean up the puke, then? And I just walked away quickly, yelling "LEARNED MY LESSON".

i want to note that i don't think it's a straighforward comparison. it is easier to put out wildfires (we know what to do with them and they happen every year-- just 2-4 yrs ago a fire reached the vicinity of San Diego, I remember because they had to move a football game around this time of the year) than to stop a hurricane from hitting a city (but not easier than maintaining leveees...). hurricanes also move faster.

that being said, those southern cali folks are gonna get some good ass treatment, and they are getting it fast... and they'll complain about it. i didn't even know our government could be this effective. what happened to "it's the state's fault," anyway? glad the federal gov't works for someone. i can't wait for the mudslides (that come after the scrub brush is burned away and there's a good rain).

hmm..
Is it just me or does everyone notice that in this unfortunate event people in California are not raiding stores for free merchandise or walking the streets with guns as their homes are being destroyed? Call it racism, call it whatever you want. In the end the people that "want" the help get the help. These people are helping each other and the government is helping as well. There is no threat to the aid that is being sent to them. There are no mobs shooting at police or National Guard. During 9-11, people were helping each other the same way. What is the difference between the locations? California and New York have cultural diversity as well. I don't think racism plays any part of these events. If there is any racism involved it was created in forums like these! Hopefully everyone can learn from these events and know that no matter what the color of our skin we should always help one another in the time of need!!

Re: hmm..
wait, really? the difference: new orleans was a bit lawless before the storm and once it hit, the people left behind were left behind with no order, government, police-- i'd get a gun and defend myself too. the people left in new orleans were majority black and poor. the plane attacks on the world trade center attacked the financial district and downtown, not the most culturally diverse areas. southern cali is filled with money and retirees. did people loot while the hurricane was laying waste to their town? i don't think so. were the storekeepers in the stores selling food and rink to the hungry and thirsty? no, they weren't.

Response to California Fires
The reason Louisiana did not get help forthcoming as quickly as California is that the Governor of Louisiana did not declare a state of emergency immediately. The Federal government is bound by certain restrictions. Until the governor of a state declares a state of emergency, the Federal government cannot step in. In this case, the governor of California immediately declared a state of emergency which allowed FEMA and the federal government to step in and send help. Let's get our facts straight people.

Re: Response to California Fires
Governor Blanco declared a State of Emergency on August 26, 2005, three days before the levees were breached.

A White Man Complains about Racism
Not just you....I mentioned that very topic today to my husband. Nothing like having millions of dollars in real estate at stake to get the federals involved. Betting that some of Bush's friends own homes there too. Funny how the Rich and Famous get special treatment. Wondering why there are no old, crippled folks sitting in buses stuck in traffic like the evacuation of New Orleans. I just can't believe that's it's all do to with "learning from their mistakes".
