LEONARD PIERCE: IS HE 15?

A very small, unfriendly lady with with very small, friendly, children just yelled at me in a parking lot for playing loud and nasty hippety-rap music.

OR IS HE 72?

I am about to drink a beer before noon on a Monday. I didn't sleep last night and I may not sleep tonight.

In other news, Local News is a book by Diane Keaton, an actress I do not like. In fact, the book is "by" her in the sense that my comic book collection is "by" me: it's a compilation of tabloid photos from Los Angeles newspapers she collected from childhood. I'm a sucker for noir-age photographs, so this brings up to two the number of things Diane Keaton has done that I have enjoyed. It is published by Lookout Books, which, if I were a marketing person, I would advertise by illustrating a bunch of yahoos cowering in fear a la a 1950s monster movie one-sheet, and the lead yahoo would be yelling "LOOK OUT! BOOKS!"

The end of this entry.

OK, I'll bite...
What is the other thing that Diane Keaton has done that you have enjoyed?

I wish I was drinking a beer. There's a chance I might get to leave work early to go to a hockey game, though, so that's promising for beer before 5:00, anyway.

Re: OK, I'll bite...
Diane Keaton was good in Annie Hall. Now that I think about it, though, even though she was a useless tool in the Godfather movies, there is a slight possibility that's what she was going for, so maybe I should credit that as a success as well.

Hockey and beer go together like an institute you can't disparage.

Re: OK, I'll bite...
I seem to recall Coppola cast her because she happened to be dating Pacino around the time they all auditioned. A few months earlier, it would have been Jill Clayburgh, who I think would have been better because at least she is not hampered with a serious case of Southern Californian flat diction. Kay is actually a pretty good role and Keaton plays it entirely as though she smelled something faintly offensive in the distance.

I watch Annie Hall now and she's so charming and he's such a manipulative pill I wonder by what collective delusion 70's America decided that he was their nebbish sweetheart.

Man, right? I still love Annie Hall despite my ever-plummeting assessment of Woody Allen as a filmmaker, but the way I react to it and identify with it is vastly different than the way I did when I first saw it in my teens. Alvy just seems like a manipulative, contrarian jerk for the most part and you want to see him fail; I find myself more and more on Tony Roberts' side in wishing everyone would just lighten up and have a martini.

Re: OK, I'll bite...
dan's mom gave me a copy of the annotated godfather for christmas, which i promptly thumbed through. i cannot recall the blurb about coppola's decision to cast keaton, but there is definitely a story there. i'm pretty indifferent to her performance, to be honest, though i do find the ginormous size of her forehead to be the most offensive aspect of it - that scene where kay and michael are eating dinner in her apartment, it's like a goddamn drive-thru movie screen!

Hey, but what about Love and Death and Sleeper?

I thought Leonard was going to be wacky and say the other thing he enjoyed by her was the Twin Peaks episode or Belinda Carlisle video she directed. Or maybe her real estate dealings - she sold Madonna her house, you know, and I'm sure made an admirable profit on the deal.
