Ask not what you can do for your country, or, the audacity of dope

One of my favorite political oratories of all time is JFK's so-called "New Frontier" speech. I read it every so often, and I'm always struck at not only how timely it's remained (parts of it are much more relevant today than when they were written), but how remarkably precise it is in expressing the sorts of things I wish more politicians would say. It's downright breathtaking in how it calls for unity, shared sacrifice, and forbearance -- how it essentially says, look, if we want a better future for everybody, we have to give up the notion of constant comfort, safety and security. And yet it's not gloomy or malaisey or comrades-we-must-all-suffer-together-ish at all; it's remarkably hopeful and optimistic. And it doesn't at all denigrate the US; it's quite patriotic, and realistically notes that since we're the biggest, the best and the brightest, everyone's looking at us to see what we do, so we better do the right thing. It's just a wonderful piece of rhetoric, and I never tire of it.

And occasionally, I realize that if anyone gave it today, people would call them a commie. You couldn't get elected rat-catcher with that speech today. There's passages in there that not even the most liberal Democrat would dare utter in the current political climate.

Ah well.
