Bon fucking jour

Hello! I am in Paris. If someone offers me a job here I'm taking it with no questions asked. This is the most amazing city I've ever seen, and that's no shit, little bit.

I will have more later, including pictures and so forth, but for now:

- I cannot thank manningkrull enough for putting me up while I'm here. He's a terrific host and a good friend and without him I wouldn't be here.

- On the other hand, despite having succumbed last night, he somehow resisted my attempts to get him drunk tonight. So I had to drink a lot of the liquor that by all rights should be poisoning his liver. Bastard.

- My French, while slightly less terrible than I thought it was, is still terrible. By way of example, I had come up with this elegant and clever way of saying "I am an American and my French is terrible", but I forgot it.

- I'm already dreading leaving this place, I shit you not.

- All the time I have been here, I have spent getting drunk, gaping at gorgeous old buildings, soaking in the liquid weight of 2000 years of history, eating astonishingly good food, and falling in love with every woman I see. If there's a better way to spend one's time, I don't know about it, and I don't want to know about it.

More later. Bon nuit, mes amis plus merveilleux, bon beaucoup nuit.

I don't speak French, but I think it's bonne nuit. I checked Babelfish and it tells me that bonne nuit means good night -- however, I ran bon nuit just to see what it said, and according to Babelfish it means "good harms". So if you'd like, I can try to have good harms.

P.S. I am glad you're having a great time!

You're right. It's just that I typed that at 3AM after spending all night getting drunk at a French rock and roll bar.

While you're in Paris, try and make a little time to visit the greatest bookshop in the world, give or take Ferlinghetti's place in San Francisco.

I haven't been there yet, but I did go to a couple of cool bookstores in Opéra.

But paris smells like urine more than any city I've ever been to. And that includes djibouti.

Man, I'm from Chicago. There is no fucking way Paris smells more like piss than Chicago. It's the official municipal odor there.

I request a picture of you wearing a beret, being snooty lounging about a sidewalk cafe.

First of all, people here totally wear berets! Manning didn't even notice it 'til I arrived, but there's tons of them. Maybe they're all tourists. There are also a lot of little kids who wear berets, which I find totally charming.

Second, I went out this morning to a brasserie called Le Rendez-vous des Artistes, and I was hanging around in the sidewalk seating section waiting for my food to arrive, and I was practicing my disdainful-chain-smoker look, and I actually thought to myself, HOLY SHIT I am in Paris lounging around at a sidewalk cafe! I've had a few of those what-the-fuck, is-this-really-happening moments: Manning and I went to the Innocents and got some panini, and we were walking around people-watching, and I was all "Goddamn, dude, we are walking around fucking Paris eating food we got from a street vendor." Amazing.

Bizarrely, my cell phone is not working. Maybe when I get back I'll do a voice post and demonstrate my awful French to you.

I always get a kick out of being addressed as "sir or madam." :)

Happy for you and envious all at once!

I love Paris and I was too young and dum to really enjoy it for the extremely brief (< 24 hrs) time I have spent there. It's for sure my next destination when I travel overseas.

I was going to use my Amelie icon but I haven't renewed my account yet so instead I must use my Gaspard Ulliel icon.

You should absolutely come back here if you can. I really want to go to Dublin next year, but if there's any way I could make two trips, I already am thinking about coming back here.

If you see this woman, I'm coming over NOW
This is an excellent entry for a Manning-based travelogue.

In fact, I just gave myself a great idea for a travel book...

If you haven't been to Le Marais yet, there's an amazing Falafel place in the Jewish quarter (Rue de Rosiers) or -- even more delicious -- a tiny place near the Shoah memorial (I think by the Quais de l'Hotel de Ville & Pt. Louis-Phillipe that makes Brique, a sort of crepe made from Moroccan flour. It is perfect for chasing away a hangover.

I had brique! Not there, but in fact it was only about an hour ago, stumbling home drunk from a goth bar in Pigalle.

It is all those things! I'm trying not to think about the fact that I have to go back to fucking San Antonio in 12 hours. Stupid real life.

You would be amazed -- or maybe you wouldn't be -- how amazingly interested and well-informed everyone over here is about the US election. Also, this town is filled with hilariously vituperative anti-Sarko propaganda.
