'Separate but equal' doctrine' ruled eminently fair; emphasis placed on 'separate'.

Remember, folks, it's not apartheid when our allies do it!

Also, while I'm alienating my whole friends list, can someone explain to me why so many people are keen on the Free Tibet movement? I'm no fan of the Chinese government, nor do I support colonialism or oppression as practiced by anybody, but the agitation isn't in service of democracy; it's for the restoration of a theocracy. So what's the big deal?

Well, aren't they ninja masters or something? We as a nation love ninjas.
Mar. 28th, 2008 01:16 pm (UTC)
That's a good point. Ninja-love is in the constitution.

I'm personally not a big fan of the restoration of a theocratic government, in which runaway serfs could be imprisoned and have their eyes gouged out. But I think a lot of people support the whole Free Tibet thing because they're charmed by the Dalai Lama. He has great celebrity support, and has done pretty well touring around with his Hallmark/fortune-cookie/feelgood philosophy. Additionally, given the number of people who subscribe to the quaint Western notion that Buddhism is a lovely, pure, nonviolent religion, the whole Free Tibet thing starts to make sense.

See, that's kinda what I think too, but whenever I say that, people frown at me.

I don't think it's so much pro-theocracy as anti-occupation - I don't know that a ton of the people who'd rather see Israel leave their occupied territories are that much in love with Palestinian culture, but they do think that oppression and subjugation of a people is, in and of itself, a bad thing, no matter what flows in to fill the resultant vacuum.
Mar. 28th, 2008 01:19 pm (UTC)
That's fair enough, and bonus points for calling me out on my hypocrisy re: Palestine; it's pretty likely that an independent Palestine would turn into at least a quasi-theocracy. (Of course, I don't support a Palestinian nation, but rather full rights and citizenship in Israel for Palestinians; but on that I differ with lots of people, including most Palestinians.)

I just wonder if most of the Free Tibet people are really generally concerned about liberation movements or are just fetishizing Tibet.

Because, like, buddhism, man. Buddhism's cool. Or something.

Awesome! Your insights are highly insightful, but I worry that more details are needed for me to fully comprehend. Like, what else can people do that justifies apartheid? How about hanging people? Shooting people? Dropping bombs on people? I need a comprehensive list of things that filthy fuckers are not allowed to do lest someone practice justifiable apartheid on them.

I'll defer to your loathing of middle eastern Arabs, which I'm sure is totally justified because you lived around them for a year or so. Myself, I'm only half middle eastern Arab, and I was raised by white people (and Christians at that, Christianity being a religion entirely free of stupidly fatalistic piety), so what do I know about their filthy fuckingness?

It's good to know, though, that despite living under military occupation, facing regular curfews, having no access to civilian courts of law, being denied equal housing and education, coping with total political disenfranchisement, and laboring under what the UN calls the worst socioeconomic conditions in the entire region, the Palestinians still find brand-new excuses not to work hard and improve their lot. Just like those lazy, lazy black people.

Since you know what things would be like if the power structures were reversed (like, say, it is in Iran, with its robust Jewish community? Or different?), could you also tell me what things would be like if Martians were in charge? How about zombies? Superintelligent robot bunnies? Also, if you have the time, please also explain how short of genocide the Israeli government is allowed to go and still be acceptable. As far as the Nazis went with the Jews? More far? Less far? I need guidance.

Man, that entire third paragraph could easily refer to any number of other ethnic groups that someone might have an irrational racist distaste for. All you'd have to do is swap out "allah" for something like "jesus" or "buddha," or even "Bush."

I'd also like to point out how really cool it is that you advocate genocide. I mean, it's not like you're talking about white folk, right?

Holy crap, perfect.

Because the Dalai Lama is all peaceful and shit. Remember that one movie with Brad Pitt, everything was cool until the Chinese generals kicked they're pretty dirt around, and then it was on like Donkey Kong!
