i'm HUNGARY...for BOOZE!

I don't know much about Hungary but I do know this: their experiment with liquor prohibition, in contrast to ours which lasted 13 years including all of the 1920s and a good third of the Great Depression, lasted exactly five months. At which point they said (in Hungarian, natch) "Fuck this, we want something to drink."

God bless you, Hungary.

  • they ferment that palinka out of windfall fruit
  • They make a red wine called Bull's Blood (Bikavér)
  • They make their version of Botrytis wines (Riesling is another) and it's called Tokaj
  • Tokaj is sung about in their national anthem (take THAT, Star Spangled Banner! Where's your alcohol?)

They also have a national drink called "Unicum", which is strongly herbal and originally created as a digestif but is now regularly consumed in multiple shots, usually late in the evening. It's something you might wish you hadn't done. Just sayin'. They told me the cure for a Unicum hangover was "more Unicum". The original recipe was spirited out of the country during the Soviet era and returned after the fall of Communism. It is incidentally made by the Zwack family.

AND the Star Spangled Banner is sung to the tune of a British drinking song called "Anachrion in Heaven", so...I guess technically it's got booze.

Didn't I once bring a bottle of Bull's Blood to dinner at your place? Or am I imagining that?

Either is possible. But I can imagine that there would have been an occasion for Egri Bikaver in all of our years of drinking together.

And I'm impressed with your knowledge of Hungarian wine! I actually did an entire PowerPoint presentation on the subject for a wine class when I was in school.
