When people ask where you are from, what is your answer?

*: For purposes of this poll, a residence is any single location in which you lived for more than three months.

**: For purposes of this poll, a location is a geographical location more than 50 miles distant from another. So, if you lived for 10 years in Paris and 10 years in London, you would select "2-3", but if you have only lived in Paris and a nearby suburb of Paris, you would only choose "1".

***: For purposes of this poll, you must have lived in a country for at least three months to count it.

****: One week at a time, not in aggregate.

Actually, I'll usually say just "Kansas" first. And if they press, I'll say "Lawrence."

This, despite the fact that my Lawrence living experience encompasses only ages birth to 3, 18 to 24, and alternating weekends between the ages of 5 and 9. And neither of parents live there (hell, they don't even live in the state anymore). What can I say, it feels like home.

I spent three months straight not living in the US, which is where I've lived the rest of my life. Those three months were spread over 13 countries. I counted this as having lived in 1 country.

No love for the number 9, huh? Well, I lived in 9 places, Leonard. I lived in 9 places.

9 for me, too. I counted it as "10" because I am an optimist.

Re: 9 times...
I counted it as "8" because I eventually bothered to read the 3 month stipulation.

Question: "Who is 999?"
(Answer: "This punk rock band's single "Homicide" received heavy rotation on Detroit AOR stations in the late 1970s.")

Sorry, I'm a niner too.

You're, what, surprised? I HAVE NEVER LIVED IN NEW YORK! Why would I give the same answer as you, if you say somewhere I've never lived?

you were born in NY!!!

But seriously, I wasn't commenting out of response to your response... more out of sadness that our childhoods were so disjointed (geographically speaking, not emotionally or anything) that we think of ourselves as being from different places.

I lived in NY for longer than we lived in Boston, which is why I say NY when I'm here in Chicago. When I'm in NY and people ask, I say "I was a teenager in Boston, but was born in the suburban area around here".

True, I was born in NYC, but that's just because that's where the hospital was. We weren't living there at the time. (I wasn't even living, yet.)

I say I am from Maine, because that's where I grew up, but a couple of years ago I passed the point where I have lived longer outside of that state than within it. I guess that means I'm old. Or I need to move back.

I said Boston in the poll, but of course, now I just reluctantly say I'm from the States and if the Aussies want to pursue it further they're welcome to.

90% of folks for some reason guess I'm Canadian first. Many of the rest as weird things like Irish? South African? Or they hear my name and say very slowly YURI? YOU SPEAK VERY GOOD ENGLISH.

Few folks' first guess is Yank for me. It's odd. Yet, of course, oddly complimentary-feeling.

Does a fort constructed of sofa pillows and bed sheets count as an Other Place of Lodging?

When people ask me, I usually tell them I'm from Alaska. I was not born there, and I haven't resided there in 18 years. It is where I spent my formative years though, and it's the place I'd like to go back to some day.

I've also spent more than a week living aboard a ship, but on the Mississippi, not at sea.

Other places I lived: 2 warehouses, over about 5 years. Warehouse meaning a large industrial storage building where I built my own walls, rooms etc. I'd put it halfway between barracks and castle in your options.

The other places I've lived not available as options on the poll:

- in a modified shipping container (three months)
- in a former Iraqi border patrol headquarters (two and a half months)
- in a monastery in France (1 week)
- in a monastery in Switzerland (1 week)

I've also probably lived in the largest tent of anyone I know (60+ people, for two weeks).

I always say New York. They usually assume I mean the city anyway. If they ask, I saw 'Manhattan".

I also spent a week on a ship on the Nile, but I'm not sure if that counts.

The barracks were fun, boy howdy!
