Yes, investing is always a wise idea

I logged on and looked at my 401k this morning. Do you know why I did that? Because I am an idiot.

Goodness grief, wake up. Hey, hey, wake up. Don't worry, that was just a dream. Here, have some coffee. Easy, easy, okay...
Dood, that was intense, I don't know what you were dreaming, but it looked like for a little while you forgot you were a writer! [*]

I'm not looking, seeing how it was already doing so poorly. I put our Roth IRAs on hold a few months ago and am using the money to pay off the mortgage earlier.

But this shows how much we need Sarah Palin and her magic lipstick, right?

Yeah, checked mine, too. I know it's a long term thing and all, but I kind of wish that 17% of my 457 was in an equity sector other than "Financials."

Like, say, candy. Or guns.

Don't fret. Inflation will lift your current portfolio to millions of dollars by the time you retire.

401k, what's that, like, an internet radio station?

Nah, that's what Johan Santana would have if he pitched 350 innings.

And the Mets bullpen would still manage to blow the lead in every game he pitches.

Oh man, I hope it's a Twins-Mets World Series. The line scores would look something like this:

MIN 000 010 144 10 18 1
NYM 000 100 350 9 15 0

That winning run would score because someone managed to walk Gomez with the bases loaded and two out.

This assumes that (a) the bottom of the Twins order can load the bases and (b) Gomez can draw a walk. No bullpen is that bad.

I checked my 403(b), the nonprofit workers' version of a 401(k), and felt like dying inside. I'm glad I moved much of my stuff out of real estate ... but ugh, seeing a negative total of my investments just depressed me.

Don't worry. All the paper your 401k is comprised of will be a fat diamond in three billion years or so.

One of the few perks of being too poor (and self employed to boot!) to HAVE a 401k is that no matter what happens in the markets, I'm as okay today as I was yesterday. That said, something saved up is better than nothing!
