In the spirit of national pride, hope, and cooperation that is sweeping the nation, RedState and Michelle Malkin have decided to throw the weight* of their readership behind Obama, and brainstorm ideas about how to improve the country.

HA HA, no, just kidding. Instead, they've decided to form "Project Leper", the goal of which is to ruin the careers of anyone who badmouths Sarah Palin.

WHAT A FINE THING

*: Not inconsiderable, I might add.

In light of the last election, the claims of some of the no-hopers like Goldberg that this PROVES that what really needs to happen is for the Republicans to move even further to the right are absolutely hilarious. YES PLEASE! DO THAT!

Honestly, if they could move towards fiscal conservatism a little bit? That would rock. I would be so happy to see the Republican Party at least recover a mission statement of not spending the country's money like drunken sailors.

I’m sure that some of them sort of mean that — it’s definitely what Grover Norquist is thinking this fine new morning in America — but most of them, when they say the party needs to move further right, they mean socially. Tougher stance on abortion, tougher stance on gays, more belligerent foreign policy, more law-and-order nonsense, and especially, a crackdown on immigration. If they even talk about economics, it’s free-market stuff like low taxes and deregulation.

Jonah Goldberg, oddly enough, is kind of a tough nut to crack in this regard; as a hardcore Reaganite, he’s presumably fiscally conservative, and he’s always bitching about how people say Bush was so conservative while by his (Goldberg’s) lights, he was the least conservative president in decades. But Reagan was a HUGE deficit spender — that’s why old-school fiscally conservative Republicans like Goldwater hated him. Jonah never talks about economics issues enough to pin him down on what he means by ‘conservative’; he’s too busy bashing liberals. Ann Coulter’s the same way.

Again, in my only half-hearted, on-again/off-again, semi-borderline interest in things political, this is the one meme that has already struck me as the most fascinating in the past couple of days: "The most important thing here, really, is that we not learn anything."
