Hey, any and all LiveJournal pals --

Once again, I’ll be in Seattle for the Experience Music Project’s Annual Pop Conference this April. So first of all, if you live in the area, let’s get together and get tore up!

Second, whether or not you live in Settle, I’m requesting your assistance in helping me find some sources for my presentation to the Pop Conference. This year, my paper will be on the role of women in black metal, and I’d like to interview as many people as possible. Here’s what I’m specifically looking for:

1. WOMEN. Sorry, fellas, take it outside.

2. WHO ARE IN THE BLACK METAL SCENE. They could be fans, musicians, girlfriends, publicists, label people or anyone who’s both female and involved in black metal. Note that I’m also specifically looking at the black metal scene; women who are into death metal, grindcore, metalcore, screamo, power metal, thrash, or whatever else need not apply unless they’re also into black metal.

If you are someone who fits that description, or if you know someone who fits that description, please leave me a message here, or e-mail me at leonard dot pierce at gmail dot com. I’m looking to do some interviews (over phone or email) and possibly get a photograph or two.

The usual caveats: there is no pay, but your name will be mentioned in the presentation. This is totally legit — it may be a lot to do with sex, but it’s not porn. It’ll be presented at a conference in front of hundreds of music writers, academics, journalists and musicians. I’d like to do the majority of the interviews by the end of March 2009.

Thanks so much for any and all help you can provide.

Is black metal that horrible atonal Satanic music that Dean Koontz* warns us all about, where if you listen to it you have to drink babies' blood and believe in global warming?

You can use that quote in your article if you want.

*In my defense I used to read him YEARS AGO

It is horrible, atonal and Satanic, yes. Drinking of babies' blood is encouraged but not mandatory. The genre is officially neutral on climatological issues.

Here's what I can't wait to hear in the lobby at EMP after your presentation: "You know, miosgyny is the only form of prejudice that's still permissable in America!"

I'll probably get some aggrieved dudes accusing me of triple-reverse sexism...

I think I can count on David Coverdale, at least.

Leonard - HOLY SHIT I AM REALLY INTERESTED IN READING THIS. I did some work on women in hardcore for a project in college, and I interviewed Victoria from Damad, and a few other people and I though it came out pretty well.

Although I know some women who have worked with Black Metal bands, I do not know any of them personally, so I will be of no help.

Good luck to you!

Fly up to SEATAC and cheer me on, dude.

So far I've nailed an interview with Tristessa from Astarte, and I'm trying to get one with the guy who did that "True Norwegian Black Metal" photo-book.

Maybe Laurie from Ludicra? Melissa from Adorior? The ladies from Astarte? You probably know about all of these, but DAMN I am interested in this.

Maybe you can snag an interview with Lance. I hear he has the blackest of all black metal bands, ever. Witch Taint forever!
