"And I'll look down and say...SQUEE."

From LJ's featured communities page today:

Now, this is probably just a failure of imagination on my part, not to mention pretty definitive evidence of the fact that works of art are not responsible for the people who like them, but I never imagined that anyone who genuinely enjoyed Watchmen would affiliate themselves with the phrase "pure squee", even in an ironic or pejorative sense. You learn something new and horrible every day, I guess.

I also learn from that same page that it's "National Novel Editing Month". Come on, people.

an outlier writes...
i prefer any kind of squee to watchmen AND its real fans

Re: an outlier writes...
You pick your poison, I guess.

And in case you weren't sure enough that they were to be avoided at all costs, they use that omnipresent, annoying Something Awful meme-smiley.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:04 pm (UTC)
Is that where that's from? For some reason it reminds me of those insufferable animated "we can lower your insurance" internet ads.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 02:37 pm (UTC)
Hmmm, pure squee, eh? Sounds as stupid as many other fandom phrases. What, novel editors don't deserve a month of their own? How about a nanosecond? Then we'd all have an excuse for missing it.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 02:38 pm (UTC)
Sorry, I meant a BETTER excuse.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 02:43 pm (UTC)
I'm declaring April "National Novel Claiming-To-Have-Written Month."
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:05 pm (UTC)
How about "National Just Write Your Fucking Novel And Shut Up About It Month"?
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:11 pm (UTC)
How about "National Nobody Gives a Shit Month"?
Mar. 3rd, 2009 07:19 pm (UTC)
I observe that during NaNoWriMo; recommend the practice to others.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 02:52 pm (UTC)
Anyone who uses the term "squee" un-ironically wins a ticket to the deep end of the gene pool. With lead shoes on.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 02:59 pm (UTC)
Ugh, I agree. That word makes me want to punch something.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 04:46 pm (UTC)
Your irritation tastes like candy.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 02:54 pm (UTC)
One of the last things I want to do is to be there for the premier of the Watchmen, listening to the squishy squishes of its "true fans" over manhattan's floppy bits.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:11 pm (UTC)
"True fans" as defined as a subset of people who live in my apartment are going to spend the day drinking Southern Comfort and re-reading The BoJeffries Saga.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:24 pm (UTC)
I saw a journal recently, but I can't figure out where I saw it--on top of that I can't spell. But the journal's name is (name of the character whose face seems to resemble a certain visual test in psychology)'sdiary. I found it funny.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:39 pm (UTC)
The first sentence in that description seems to gel poorly in my brain.

Because I hate myself I took a look at the community. It is certainly a fandom. Look at all the FanFic!

What does this mean:

Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:48 pm (UTC)
Isn't that the young Comedian in the icon?
Mar. 3rd, 2009 03:51 pm (UTC)
Ohhh. If it's the Comedian, then it makes... more sense than it previously did.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 04:07 pm (UTC)
Doubt I'll be watching the film, it seems pointless, but I may well curl up with the comic and enjoy the purity of my squee.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 04:19 pm (UTC)
Given my previous experience with Zack Snyder films, I think the only "squee" I'll have with the Watchmen film is searching for the Out Of The Blue Homophobic Moment/Character, but I'm not quite sure if that fits the definition of "squee."

Anyway, the existence of the movie did get me to re-read the book and it was really good, so...yay!
Mar. 3rd, 2009 04:44 pm (UTC)
March is national navel orange month! FEEL THE EXCITEMENT!
Mar. 3rd, 2009 09:45 pm (UTC)
It's also Hypnotic Skirt Dance Month!

At least on my calendar it is...
Mar. 3rd, 2009 05:04 pm (UTC)
To celebrate National Novel-Editing Month, I just cut Herbert Stencil out of "V". Unfortunately, we'll have to refer to it as "\" from now on.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 05:42 pm (UTC)
I'm imagining all these dimwits in one room, and Alan Moore entering through the only door with the Comedian's flamethrower already lit. Wouldn't if they'd "squee" then?
Mar. 3rd, 2009 06:29 pm (UTC)
I think that the implication of the two items both being on the same page is that someone dropped the ball in not making Watchmen a novel and, of course, editing in some damn squee.
Mar. 3rd, 2009 06:59 pm (UTC)
I blame Fandom With A Capital F. You know the types. The scans_daily crowd. The We Have a Constitutional Right To Write About Harry Potter Taking It Up The Ass From Professor Dumblydorf And How DARE Livejournal Censor Our Art!!! crowd.

Those people are pretty much unilaterally terrible.
Mar. 4th, 2009 05:35 am (UTC)
I'm sort of bothered by the term "hunkering down," as I don't really associate hunkering down with seeing movies in theaters. Y'know? You can hunker down to watch a movie at home, but it's not necessarily a public activity.
Mar. 4th, 2009 06:44 pm (UTC)
April is "National Book Jacket Design When My Novel is Ultimately Published Fantasizing-About" month.

NaBoJaDeWheNoUpFaMo -- all the cool kids are doing it!
